The Somnath temple is located in the Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, is believed to be the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas of the Shiva. It is the important pilgrimage and famous tourist spot of Gujarat.

Then Soma, the Moon god, is believed to have lost his luster due to a curse, and he bathed in the Sarasvati River at this site to regain it. Then the result is the waxing and waning of the moon, no doubt an allusion to the waxing and waning of the tides at this seashore location.
The name of the town Prabhas, meaning luster, as well as the alternative names as Someshvar and Somnath (“The lord of the moon” or “the moon god”), arise from this tradition.

Then The Baṇastambha mentions that it stands at a point on the Indian landmass that is the first point on land in the north to the South Pole at that particular longitude.
Then the later sources of history account for several desecrations by Muslims invaders during eleventh to eighteen century A.D. then The temple was rebuilt every time with the reconstructive spirit of the people.
Then the modern temple was reconstructed by the resolve of Sardar Patel who visited the ruins of Somnath temple on November 13 1947. Then President of India, then Dr. Rajendra Prasad did Pran-Pratistha at the existing temple on 11 May 1951.
