History & Importance

The chief legend of Purnagiri Shakti Peeth relates to the creation of the Shakti Peethas. Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, was married to the god Shiva versus his wishes. Daksha arranged a great yajna but did not invite Sati and also Shiva. Uninvited, Sati reached the yajna-site, where Daksha ignored Sati as well as Shiva.

Sati was not able to withstand this insult. So, Devi Sati gave her life by jumping into the fire of Havan organized by her father King Daksh. When Lord Shiva was running around the planet carrying her body Lord Vishnu divided the body into 51 parts utilizing his Sudarshan chakra. Out of those 51 parts, from which the ‘navel’ of Sati fell to this place.

Story of False Temple

While coming back from Purnagiri Mandir one comes across what is considered as the ‘Jhoota Mandir’ (False Temple). If his dream of having a child was satisfied, it is said a trader had offered Maa Purnagiri that he would construct a golden Altar. His desire was granted by the Goddess. Greed overcame the trader and he constructed an altar of copper with gold plating. When the altar was being brought up, it was kept on the ground while the people bring it rested. It would not move when they attempted to pick it up once again. The trader recognized the Goddess’ annoyance, urged forgiveness, and constructed a temple over that altar.
