The Kamakhya Temple is Located on Nilachal Hill in the western part of Guwahati city in Assam India. The Kamakhya Temple is also known as the Kamrup-kamakhya temple. It is one of the oldest of the 51 Shakti Pithas of India. The main temple is dedicated to the ten Mahavidyas of Saktism Kali, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Kali, Tara, Tripura Sundari, Kamalatmika, Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, and Matangi. It is an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus and tantric worshipers.

In July 2015 the Supreme Court of India transferred the administration of the temple from the Kamakhya debutter board to the bordeuri samaj. The current temple was built and renovated many times in the period 8th-17th century in Nilachal-type construction. The temple consists of four chambers garbhagriha and three mandapas.

The vimana over the garbhagriha has a Pancha Ratha plan. on the top of the plinths are dados from a later period which are of the Khajuraho. The panels have delightful sculptured of Ganesha and other Hindu gods and goddesses. the lower portion is of the stone in the shape of a polygonal beehive-like dome made of brick.

The Garbhagriha is a small dark and you can reach it by narrow steep stone steps. Inside the cave, there is a sheet of stone that slopes downwards from both sides meeting in a yoni-like depression some 10 inches deep.

History of Kamakhya Temple:

As Per historians, the Kamakhya temple is an ancient temple for an Austroasiatic tibal goddess. The earliest historical dynasty of kama rupa as well as Xuan Zang a 7th-century Chinese traveler ignored the Kamakhya and it is assumed that the worship at least till that period was kirata based beyond the Brahminical ambir. The first epigraphic of Kamakhya was found in the 9th-century Tezpur plates of the Mlechchha dynasty. also, other archaeological evidence was found during the 8th-9th century.

Palas of kama rupa kings from the Indra pala to Dharma pala were followers of the Tantrik tenet during the 10th century. It is found from Tibetan records some of the Buddhist professors in Tibet of the 10th and 11th centuries hailed from kama rupa.

In 1566-1572 the temple was destroyed by the Kalapahar and reconstructed in 1587 by the Chilarai.

Worship

The kamkhya is the young bride of Shiva and the giver of salvation. Shakti is known as the Kamakhya. Tantra is basic to worship this ancient temple of the mother goddess Kamakhya.

Festivals

The main festival of this temple is the Durga puja is celebrated annually during Navaratri. It is a five-day festival that attracts thousands of visitors. Tantra worship attracts thousands of tantra devotees in an annual festival known as the ambubachi mela.
