The Kamakhya Temple is Located in NIlachal hill in the western part of Guwahati city in Assam India.The kamakhya Temple is also known as kamrup-kamakhya temple.it is one of the oldest of the 51 shakti pithas of india.The main temple is dedicated to the ten mahavidyas kali,tara,sodashi,bhuvaneshwari,bhairavi,chhinnamasta,dhuma,vati,bagalamukhi,Matagni and kamatamika.It is important pilgrimage destination for hindus and tantric worshipers.
In July 2015 the supreme court of india transferred the administration of the temple from the kamakhya debutter board to the bordeuri samaj.
The current temple was built and renovated many times in period 8th-17th century in Nilachal type construction.The temple consist of four chambers garbhagriha and three mandapas.The vimana over the garbhagriha has pancharatha plan.on the top of the plinths are dados from a later period which are of the khajuraho.The panels have delightful sculptured of ganesha and other hindu gods and goddesses.lower portion is of the stone in shape of the polygonal beehive like dome is made of brick.
The garbhagriha is amll drak and you can reach by narrow steep stones steps.Inside the cave there is a sheet of stone that slopes downwards from the both sides meeting in a yoni like depression some 10 inches deep.

History of Kamakhya Temple:
As Per historians the kamakhya temple is ancient temple for an austroasiatic tibal goddess.The earliest historical dynasty of kamarupa as well as xuanzang a 7th century Chinese traveler ignored the kamakhya and it is assumed that the worship at least till that period was kirata based beyond the brahmincal ambir.The first epigraphic of kamakhya was found in the 9th century tezpur plates of mlechchha dynasty.also other archaeological evidence found during the 8th-9th century.
Palas of kamarupa kings from the indra pala to dharma pala were followers of the tantrik tenet during 10th century.It is found from Tibetan records some of the Buddhist professors in Tibet of the 10th and 11th century hailed from kamarupa.
In 1566-1572 the temple was destroyed by the kalapahar.and reconstructed in 1587 by the chilarai.
The kamkhya is the young bride of shiva and giver of salvation.Shakti is known as the kamakhya.Tantra is basic to worship of this ancient temple of mother goddess kamakhya.
The main festival of this temple is Durga puja is celebrated annually during navaratri. It is five day festival attracts thousands of visitors.Tantra worship attatacts thousands of tantra devotes in an annual festival known as the ambubachi mela.

5:30 AM – Snana of the Pithasthana
6:00 AM – Nitya puja
8:00 AM – Temple door open for devotees
1:00 PM – Temple door closed for food offerings to the goddess.
