History

According to Legend, King Mandhata near the bank of the Narmada River worshipped Lord Shiva, and the Lord gave him a darshan when he was pleased by his penance and gave him infinite light and stay here as Omkareshwar. Later on, the mountain is called as Omkar-Mandhata.

Another legend is the story of the Vindhya Mountain, which was once provoked by sage Narada. Vindhya was determined to show Narada incorrect and started observing strict penance with the goal of pleasing Lord Shiva. On the banks of river Narmada, where Onkareshwar Linga was located, the mountain did a strict penance for 6 months. Satisfied with his austerity, Lord Shiva appeared to him and asked to request a boon. On such a saying of Lord Shiva, the Vindhyachal asked God to give him wisdom. At the very same time, pray also to be established at this place for eternity. On the genuine demand of all the gods and the sages, Lord Shiva made 2 parts of the lings. One part is known by the name of Onkar and the other is considered as God or Amaleshwar.

Importance

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is located in nature. One half of the Jyotirlinga is in the Omkareshwar Temple and the other half is in the Mammaleshwar Temple. The devotees must visit both these temples to get a darshan of the complete Jyotirlinga. The Jyotirlingas are Swayambhu which means that they are self-born.

Architecture

It has a huge Sabha Mandap (meeting or prayer hall) standing on about 60 huge brownstone pillars (14 feet high), elaborately carved with a curious frieze and fillet of satyr-like figures. The temple is 5 storeyed each having a different deity like:

  • Mahakaleshwar- It is on the first floor and has the beautiful look of Maa Narmada.
  • Siddnath, Gupteshwar, and Dhwajeshwar temples are located on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors.

Legend Of Jyotirlingas

  • According to the Shiva Purana, Brahma and Vishnu had an argument in terms of the supremacy of creation. In order to resolve the dispute, Shiva decided to pierce the 3 worlds as a countless pillar of light. Both Vishnu and Brahma started downwards and upwards respectively to discover the end of the light. Brahma lied that he had discovered the end while Vishnu accepted that he could not and accepted defeat. Shiva cursed Brahma and as punishment for lying to him, Brahma would not be part of any ceremonies while Vishnu would always be worshipped.
  • The jyotirlinga is the supreme partless reality, out of which Shiva partly appears. The jyothirlinga temples, hence are locations where Shiva appeared as a fiery column of light. Each of the twelve jyothirlinga sites takes the name of the presiding deity– each believed to be a various manifestation of Shiva. At all these sites, the main image is the jyotirlingam representing the infinite nature of Shiva.
