Chandranath Temple is located on top of the 350 meters high Chandranath hill. It is a popular Shakti Peeth located near Sitakunda in Bangladesh. At this Temple according to Hindu sacred texts, the right arm of Goddess Sati fell here. It is one of the shaktipeeth of devi sati.

History & Importance

The chief legend of Chandranath relates to the creation of the Shakti Peethas. Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, was married to the god Shiva versus his wishes. Daksha arranged a great yajna but did not invite Sati and Shiva. Uninvited, Sati reached the Yajna site, where Daksha ignored Sati as well as Shiva.

Sati was not able to withstand this insult. So, Devi Sati gave her life by jumping into the fire of Havan organized by her father King Daksh. When Lord Shiva was running around the planet carrying her body Lord Vishnu divided the body into 51 parts utilizing his Sudarshan chakra. Out of those 51 parts, from which the ‘Right Arm’ of Sati fell to this place. Here Sati is called kumari and Lord Shiva is called Bhairav.

The Rajmala mentions that about 800 years ago, Raja Biswambhar Sur, an offspring of the popular Adisur of Gaur, attempted to get to Chandranath by sea. The Nigamkalpataru describes the poet Jayadev living for a long time in Chandranath. By the time of Dhanya Manikya, ruler of Tripura, Chandranath had various endowments. Dhanya Manikya attempted to eliminate the Idol of Shiva from the temple of his kingdom but failed.

Idol

There are 2 idols here, one is of Devi Sati and is called Bhavani. The other idol in this temple is Lord Shiva Considered the Chandrashekhar. This specific word is depicted for all those individuals who have a moon at the crown or at the top of their head. According to the belief of lots of local people, Lord Shiva himself has devoted himself to seeing Chandrasekhar Hill throughout Kali Yuga. The temple is wonderfully made with pebble structures and art.
