Chandika Sthan is a Hindu temple located in Munger, in the Indian state of Bihar. It is among the sixty-four Shakti Peethas, locations of worship dedicated to the goddess Shakti. On the Northeast corner of Munger, Chandika Sthan is only 2 kilometers far from Munger town. Being a Siddhi-Peetha, Chandika Sthan is believed to be among the most divine and spiritual temples, as significant as the Kamakshya temple near Guwahati.

History

The chief legend of Chandika Sthan relates to the creation of the Shakti Peethas. Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, was married to the god Shiva despite his wishes. Daksha arranged a great yajna but did not invite Sati and Shiva. Uninvited, Sati reached the yajna site, where Daksha ignored Sati as well as Shiva.

Sati was not able to withstand this insult. So, Devi Sati gave her life by jumping into the fire of Havan organized by her father King Daksh. When Lord Shiva was running around the planet carrying her body Lord Vishnu divided the body into 64 parts utilizing his Sudarshan chakra. Out of those 64 parts, from which the ‘Left Eye’ of Sati fell to this place.

Another legend connected with Chandika Sthan is related to King Karna of the historical Indian kingdom of Anga, who used to worship Chandi Mata daily, and in turn, the Goddess provided him 11/4 pounds (comparable to 50 kgs) of gold for distribution amongst the downtrodden and needy at Karanchaura, now a local name for the area. In the city of Munger, the eastern area of the city on the bank of river Ganga, amongst the Vindhya Mountain range in a cave, Shakti Peeth Maa Chandika Sthan is located with a traditional significance. The place where Chandika Sthan is located, the left eye of Maa had fallen, it is believed that the history of Chandika Sthan is related to Raja Karna. Raja Karna was a worshipper of Maa.
